Transport around East Kilbride
Bus passengers in East Kilbride are set to benefit from a more frequent bus service to Glasgow City Centre and Clydebank from Sunday 11 January 2004, as part of a package of service changes by First, Glasgow’s largest bus operator, aimed at improving bus travel.
Service 66, known as the “Red” line owing to its bright colour branding, will now operate as frequently as every 7 minutes during the day Mondays to Saturdays, in response to passenger demand for fast and efficient bus travel connecting East Kilbride with Glasgow. The improvement will also mean more low-floor buses on the route, ensuring ease of access for everyone.
The route, which is one of 24 high – frequency “Overground” routes operated by First and one of eight 24 hour services, has gone from strength to strength over the last two years: in May 2002 its frequency was improved to operate every 15 minutes through the night between the hours of 0030 and 0430 on Saturday and Sundays; and in May 2003, colour branding was introduced with coloured linear maps on the sides of buses and at bus stops to show clearly the route of the bus, frequency and price information, a new network map and new, improved timetables for passengers
Eric Stewart, Managing Director, Glasgow commented:
“We are delighted to be able to provide an even more frequent service for people living in East Kilbride and hope to encourage more people, who don’t currently use public transport, to see the bus as an environmentally friendly option to meet their travel needs”.
Service 66 is just one of several high frequency Overground routes operating in East Kilbride, including colour branded services 16, 18, 20 and 201. The service links Calderwood and East Kilbride with Clydebank and Mountblow via Clarkston, Glasgow City Centre and Anniesland.
